Three possible models of the connections between body-part identity and spatial memory were examined with functional magnetic resonance imaging: 1) a unitary model, which assumes that landmarks are encoded with respect to a single type of reference, i.e., a single body-part; 2) a multiunit model, which posits that the reference system is the same at all landmarks, but the response of brain activation is tuned to one or more of the body-part identities; and 3) a modular model, which assumes that different body-part representations are encoded in separate neural regions, that they are reactivated in a specific order, and that they are reactivated when the information content of the sequence is processed. All three models were supported with volumetric analysis of the fMRI data and with a previously reported kinematic study that indicated that symbolic comparison of body-parts is through reference to spatial positions, rather than the spatial orientations of the body-parts. These results support the modular model more strongly than either of the other two models.
